8 Tips for Preparing for Mediation

– A Mediator’s Reflection –

Over time, I’ve seen that people who prepare for mediation usually get more out of it. Here are some tips I often share, based on what I’ve learned along the way:

1. Get organised.
It helps to gather your notes, important papers, or key points before the session. When you’re clear on the details, you feel more confident. Organise what you’re prepared to share and have copies of key documents available when possible.

2. Know what really matters to you.
Sometimes people argue about small things because they haven’t thought about what’s most important. I’ve found that naming your “must-haves” helps you stay focused. Try to think broadly or risk a positional bargaining dynamic.

3. Be aware of your limits.
Every person has things they can’t agree to, no matter what. I remind people that it’s okay to know your boundaries and respect them.

4. Think about the other side.
It’s not easy, but trying to imagine what matters to the other person can make the conversation smoother. I’ve seen that even a little empathy can go a long way.

5. Prepare to listen.
Mediation isn’t just about talking—it’s also about hearing. I notice the best progress happens when people listen as much as they speak.

6. Keep your emotions in check.
Feelings can run high. I encourage people to notice their emotions, but not let anger or frustration take over. Pausing before reacting makes a big difference. Talk with the mediator beforehand to help track and diffuse those situations early.

7. Be open to ideas.
Sometimes the solution is something nobody thought of before. I’ve learned that flexibility often leads to better outcomes.

8. Focus on moving forward.
At the end of the day, mediation is about finding a path that works well enough for everyone. The goal isn’t a perfect win—it’s progress.
